In this particular case the challenge starts with the marriage certificate of Edward Chambers to Ann Parsons.

Extract Marriage Certifice Edward Chambers - Ann Parsons 1845

Extract from Marriage Certificate Edward Chambers to Ann Parsons 1845. Parish of Brading (County Southampton). Here we can see that it states that Edwards father is stated as James Chambers a Labourer. If we look at the subsequent Census entries for this family, they quite clearly show Edward as born in Brixton (see Brixton, IOW for alternative names such as Brighstone). So you search for the birth of Edward Chambers. There is none in the IGI, or in the Isle of Wight [21] card index. Not relying solely on the card index then I scanned the Brixton Baptisms for the period looking for entries for Chambers. There are plenty and all living in place called Marsh Green (see map below). I also scaned the baptisms for the other people living in Marsh Green, and anyone with a Christian name of Edward whos parents were either James of Harriet. No luck!

The children that were baptised in Brixton are: (sources {1}= Microfilmed baptismal records for Brighstone, {2} IOW record office Card Index, {3}=IGI)
  1. Children of John (labourer of Brixton-1828 otherwise Labourer of Marsh Green) and Eliza
    1. Edward Chambers 2/3/1828 {1} {2}
    2. James Chambers 19/9/1819 {1} {2}
    3. Anne Chambers 26/12/1824 {1} {2}
    4. William Chambers 19/6/1822 {1}
  2. Children of James (labourer of Marsh Green) and Ann
    1. Elizabeth Chambers 26/5/1816 {1} {2} {3}
    2. William Chambers 2/6/1818 {1} {2 DATED 28/6/1818} {3 dated 28/6/1818}
    3. James Chambers 23/4/1822 {1} {2} {3}
    4. Hannah Chambers 1/8/1813 {1} {3}
  3. Other Children of a James and Ann Chambers according to the IGI. Are these the same James and Ann?
    1. Chambers Charlotte  Christening: 1798/SEP/28 Brixton,Hampshire,England {3}
    2. Chambers Anne  Christening: 1804/JUN/10 Brixton,Hampshire,England {3}
    3. Chambers Israel Christening: 1809/JUN/25 Brixton,Hampshire,England {3}
    4. Chambers Hannah  Christening: 1809/JUN/25 Brixton,Hampshire,England {3} Note there are two distinct entries in the IGI for a Hannah, one in 1809 and the other in 1813
  1. Others
    1. John Chambers (illig) 11/10/1820 son of Charlotte Chambers Spinster of Marsh Green {1}
    2. Ann Chambers 18/12/1824 (illig) dau of Hannah Chambers of Marsh Green{1}
    3. Amelia James 9/7/1820 (illig) daughter of Hannah James Marsh Green Spinster {1}
    4. Ann Woodford 14/9/1813 dau Philip & Heather Woodford Marsh Green

This gets us nowhere. Whilst there were a couple called James Chambers and Ann from Marsh Green that were having children there is little gap for a possible Edward in that period. The only Edward Listed was baptised to John Chambers and Eliza on the 2nd March 1828.

So let us go back to square one and have a re-look at the marriage of Edward Chambers and Ann Parsons. In this case to look at the Banns for the marriage of Edward Chambers to Ann Parsons. This says something very intriguing:

Brading 1845, Edward Chambers Boyce,  Bachelor and Ann Parsons, Spinster, both of this parish Banns Read Sept 28th, Oct 5th and Oct 12th (They got married Oct 16th) What is this name Boyce added into his name?

The entry on FreeReg [22] for their marriage is:

County Isle of Wight
Place Newport
Church St Thomas-a-Becket

MarriageDate 23 Mar 1825

GroomSurname BOYCE

BrideForename Harriet

We then discover that James Boyce (Widower) married a Harriett Chambers on 23/March/1825 Newport (IOW). So was Edward the son of Harriet (before marriage to James Boyce) and he adopted (partially) his step fathers name? This might be verified if we could find out more about this family of Boyces. So we see if we can find them in any census data. So first we search the 1861 census and find James Boyce, His wife Harriet and their son George at 8 High Street Brading.

1861 Extract IOW brading

Extract from 1861 Census Brading IOW

The important thing here is that it establishes the family as being in Brading during the period 1825 to 1861 (i.e. they haven’t emigrated). Now from this we can ascertain that Harriet was aged 58 and hence born about 1803 in Brixton. James Boyce is aged 64 and hence born about 1797. When we look into the 1871 census we can find the son George Boyce, but by this time he has got married to a Julia. He is living in High street (same as 1861) but the census doesn’t say which street number.

1871 Census IOW Brading

Extract from 1871 Census Brading IOW

When George Boyce gets married it was as Samuel George Boyce to Julia Jane Woods in 1863 Isle of Wight.

Now let us step back to the 1851 census and this is where it gets interesting. In High Street Brading there are two cottages next to each other, one is Rock Cottage and the other Bank Cottage. It appears that James Boyce and his wife Harriet (nee Chambers) are living in Rock Cottage whilst next door in Bank Cottage is a John Haydon and George Boyce claims he is John's brother in law.

Now from this we can ascertain that Harriet was born about 1802 in Brixton. Now we have an approximate birth date (1802-1803) and place for Harriet let us check in the IOW index and the IGI for an appropriate birth and what we find is:

Christening: Husband: Chambers James  Sex M, Wife: ? Ann  Sex F

Child Chambers Harriet  Christening: 1802/JAN/24 Shorwell,Hampshire,England

Now where is Shorwell? The following map shows us it is not too far (1.9miles) from Brixton and Marsh Green. So it could be the correct one.

Brixton 1830

Shorwell IOW 1830

So to verify this relationship to Haydon we need to establish if Elizabeth Boyce (Dau James Boyce and Harriet Chambers) married a John Haydon. We find this on FreeBMD as John Hayden registering marriage to  Elizabeth Boyce, Isle-of-Wight 4q 1849. (Seach found via Elizabeth Boyce).

On checking back with the 1861 census we find the Haydons weren’t living in High Street. Have to persue them later.

Now the tricky one the 1841 census. (see below). Here we find the family by limiting the search to Brading, and Thomas born 1836 plus or minus 2 years. Hey presto there they are as a family name of Royce! The Address is Sandown Village. Remember the ages are only accurate to the nearest 5 years. There is no relationship stated between the various members of the family and no place of birth except y/n for same county.

This entry introduces three new people James Boyce aged 15, Edward Boyce aged 15 and John Boyce aged 12. Bear in mind James Boyce and Harriet Chambers got married in 1825. Now if we make the assumption that Edward is in fact the Edward Chambers born about 1822 then whom are James and John. At his marriage to Harriet in 1825 James Boyce was a widow and had previously been married to a Jane Squibb who died in 1823 after having given birth to their third child. They had

  1. Boyce Jane pn[803662] Sex F (-1816-) Christening: 1816/JUL/31 Iow,,Hampshire,England
  2. Boyce William pn[803668] Sex M (-1820-) Birth: 1820 Iow,,Hampshire,England
  3. Boyce James Squib pn[803665] Sex M (-1823-) Birth: 1823/FEB/23 Iow,,Hampshire,England

So it is likely that this James was the son of that earlier marriage. That leaves us with John could have to be an unregistered son of James Boyce and Harriet.

The next step is the birth of Harriet Chambers and who are her parents. (---comment on Boyce children---------). Harriets parents were stated as James Chambers and Ann.  Christening: 1802/JAN/24 Shorwell,Hampshire,England. There were up to 9 children who are the children of one or more parents called James Chambers and Ann baptised in Brixton. These are:

  1. Children of James (labourer of Marsh Green) and Ann
  2. Elizabeth Chambers 26/5/1816
  3. William Chambers 28/6/1818
  4. James Chambers 23/4/1822
  5. Hannah Chambers 1/8/1813
  6. Other Children of a James and Ann Chambers according to the IGI. Are these the same James and Ann?
  7. Chambers Charlotte  Christening: 1798/SEP/28 Brixton,Hampshire,England
  8. Chambers Anne  Christening: 1804/JUN/10 Brixton,Hampshire,England
  9. Chambers Israel Christening: 1809/JUN/25 Brixton,Hampshire,England
  10. Chambers Hannah  Christening: 1809/JUN/25 Brixton,Hampshire,England Note there are two distinct entries in the IGI for a Hannah, one in 1809 and the other in 1813

In addition the 1841 census gives an Eliza Chambers aged 20 (see extract below). Now normally an age of 20 in the 1841 census would be taken as between 20 and 25 (and hence could be the Elizabeth born 26/5/1816. However for some strange reason the names of the parents are fairly precise. Is this another Elizabeth or is this not a daughter at all? The other slightly odd thing here is that James has changed from a labourer to a fisherman.

Could all of those children be the children of one James Chambers and Ann or could there be two. Let us see what we can find out about what happened to these children perhaps that will give us a clue. We start with the 1851 census as that gives more reliable information than 1841.

That task needs to be completed what else should we check up on.

  1. Recheck Brixton Baptism records for the children of James and Ann Chambers according to the IGI. Are these the same James and Ann?
  • Chambers Charlotte Christening: 1798/SEP/28 Brixton,Hampshire,England {3}
  • Chambers Anne Christening: 1804/JUN/10 Brixton,Hampshire,England {3}
  • Chambers Israel Christening: 1809/JUN/25 Brixton,Hampshire,England {3}
  • Chambers Hannah Christening: 1809/JUN/25 Brixton,Hampshire,England {3} Note there are two distinct entries in the IGI for a Hannah, one in 1809 and the other in 1813

....to be continued.
